The 2023 season is fast approaching and with it some big changes to karting from Motorsport UK (MSUK). These include significant changes to the junior class structure and a new clubman initiative from MSUK. Discussions have taken place between the ASKC and MSUK to encourage a united approach from the 4 Scottish kart clubs to what the offering will be. The decision has been taken to go down the MSUK route for all club racing offered at Grampian Kart Club with the exception of our March meeting which will be run as an open. This is to assist the bedding in of a lot of new faces before switching to the MSUK clubman offering from April onwards.

What does this mean for you as a competitor? You will have to hold an MSUK competition licence with the clubman initiative offering a fast track process to getting that licence. Your kart and safety equipment must adhere to the MSUK blue and yellow books – included but not limited to snell approved crash helmet, sealed engines in classes where applicable and drop-down nose cones in applicable classes. The club will have no discretion. At this moment in time the club isn’t certain if there will be cost implications and whether the previous fee for a BDOC would have to be increased to accommodate these events.

Classes that will be supported under the MSUK clubman initiative are:

  • Bambino
  • Honda Cadet (160 & 200)
  • Micro Max
  • Junior Max
  • Senior Max
  • Senior Max 177
  • KZUK

There is the possibility to run the twin engine pro karts as a class but the above stipulations would apply. Full details of the classes can be found in the the MSUK yearbook https://www.motorsportuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Gold-Book-2023-updated-230123.pdf and equipment requirements https://www.motorsportuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Yearbook-2023-COMPLETE-7.pdf

The calendar would be as follows:

  • March 12 – Open, run to the BDOC rules with the addition of micro max.
  • April 9 – MSUK Clubman
  • May 14 – MSUK Clubman
  • June 11 – ASKC Scottish Super Series Round 2
  • July 9 – MSUK Clubman
  • August 13 – MSUK Clubman
  • September 10 – MSUK Clubman
  • October 8 – MSUK Clubman

The club would appreciate your thoughts on the matter and whether this is something as a racer you would be supporting. Either reply to the discussion on social media or email your feedback to webmaster@grampiankartclub.com
